{November 4, 2010}   Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Offends on Ellen DeGeneres Show

Lady Gaga Neat DressBy now most have seen Lady Gaga’s infamous raw meat bikini on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan and her similar meat dress at MTV’s 2010 Video Music Awards this past Sunday, but even more scandalous is the backlash from Vegan and animal rights advocate Ellen DeGeneres.

Gaga wore the notorious dress—complete with meat-covered platform boots and a slab of raw flesh atop her head like a beret—to her appearance on DeGeneres’ daytime television show, which aired on Monday.

Reportedly, Gaga’s fleshy attire shocked and disturbed DeGeneres, a presenter at the VMA’s. DeGeneres released an explanation to the media stating, “I love Lady Gaga, but as someone who also loves animals, it was really difficult for me to sit next to Lady Gaga when she was wearing that outfit.”

On Tuesday, in an interview with Ryan Seacrest on his radio show, DeGeneres recounted her reaction to the news that Gaga would wear the dress on her show: “I was like, ‘Can she please change because this is going to be very awkward and this is a daytime show.’ It’s not the VMAs. She’s gonna show up doing this and then it’s gonna air tomorrow during daytime and then she’s sitting, ya know, on my show in a meat dress and it’s gonna be weird for her.”

Gaga’s explanation for the ensemble? During her appearance on DeGeneres’s show Gaga said, “Well, it’s certainly no disrespect to anyone who is Vegan or Vegetarian and as you know, I’m the most judgment-free human being on the earth. However, originally, it has many interpretations but for me this evening, if we don’t stand up for what we believe in, if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re gonna have as much rights as the meat on our bones.”

Despite DeGeneres’ distaste for the dress, she reacted lightheartedly on her show by giving Gaga an organic kale bikini to wear for the 2011 Video Music Awards. Gaga responded graciously. She also expressed great support for the gay community and her delight for the House of Representative’s recent overturning of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. DeGeneres closed the interview by once again congratulating Gaga on her recent success at the awards show.

Gaga turned heads at the Video Music Awards with all of her outrageous, high fashion outfits. One was a royalty-inspired Alexander McQueen gown, which paid homage to the recent death of the designer. She also wore a futuristic black leather number by Armani and, of course, her notorious meat dress, which Franc Fernandez designed.

Although Gaga is perhaps equally famous for her outrageous antics as she is for her music, she was the big winner of the 2010 Video Music Awards. Gaga had 13 nominations and took home 8 awards, including Video of the Year for her song “Bad Romance.”
