By – Nidarshana SharmaHow to choose the perfect perfume that suits you best?

The perfume counter- filled with hundreds of different fragrances, is certainly the best part of shopping. Perfume selection can be a fun activity but when there are plenty of designer fragrances to choose, it can become a frustrating chore.

Plenty of advertisements are plastered all over newspapers, magazines, the Internet and billboards. Many companies entice you with free samples thinking it would make our choice simpler. But it doesn’t really help.

The nose is easily confused and when your nose “doesn’t know”, how do you proceed with selecting the right designer fragrance for you? Even more confusing, how do you select the right perfume or cologne for gift giving and what’s the difference between perfume, scented oils, and cologne?

What is it that causes perfume selection confusion?

Designers very smartly, make their fragrance very similar to already existing popular brands. There is a very thin line of difference between fragrances, thus.
Sometimes the difference in fragrance is too vast.

Our personal preferences are also different. Some of us prefer fruity smells while some others like flowery smells more.
Some perfumes smell good but are exorbitantly priced, especially designer ones.

A first step in cutting through perfume selection confusion is to learn about the basic categories of perfume:

Knowing the difference between these categories helps you to choose fragrances that fit and put the cork on perfume selection confusion!
Seven basic types of fragrances are as follows:

1. Floral
2. Fougere
3. Chypre
4. Leather
5. Woody
6. Oriental
7. Citrus

Floral- These are the most popular scents made out flower extracts like jasmine, lily, rose, gardenia, orange blossom and carnation. It is associated with naturalness and smoothness. So if you are a simple person, a floral scent would suit you best. It is largely used by women.

Fougere- Fougere in French means fern. This type of fragrance uses slightly wilder items like oakmoss which is combined with other herbal ingredients like lavender and coumarin. This type of fragrance is more popular among men.

Chypre- Here again some fresh scents like citrus are combined with woody scents like oakmoss, patchouli and labdanum. These fresh scents may also be replaced with some fruity scents. This scent is considered manly.

Leather- Pungent, animal-like scents of the ingredients used in the tanning process are very evident. That’s how it gets its name. Castoreum, labdanum, phenols, and quinolones are the most popular fragrances.

Woody: An odour which is linked to the aroma of freshly cut dry wood such as Cedarwood Oil, Virginian, Sandalwood. Used more by women.

Oriental- Fragrances like vanilla, oakmoss and in some cases animal notes. Examples are Shalimar, Obsession, Opium, Samsara.

Citrus- They are derived from citrus fruits such as Pomello, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon. This fragrance type projects a sharp, tangy aura. They are naturally refreshing and uplifting. Citrus blends are among the oldest known scents, first worn by men and now popular with women as well.

Keeping these fragrance types in mind, it is on you to decide which will suit you the best. Choose a good perfume with an interesting fragrance, which suits your personality.
