{November 23, 2010}   Handling Drug Addiction

by – Nidarshana Sharma

In the present scenario, where our lives are ruled by stress and pressure, dependence on certain forces outside has increased.PeopleHandling Drug Addiction have progressively started taking to smoking, alcohol and drugs. While these practices have not been uncommon in the past, they have witnessed a gradual surge in their takers.School going and college students have started reveling in the after-effects of these fantasy yielding vices.Quite unfortunately, most of them are not even aware of the web that they are stuck in and are unable to wiggle themselves free.Rave parties and quiet picnics have become the order of the day.The soaring demand for these pills, power and leaves have sent prices skyrocketting.

The effects of drug addiction can be disturbing-not just for the addict but for others around them.If left unrestricted, the drug is going to win.Drug abuse is a disease of the brain, and the drugs change brain chemistry, which results in a change of behavior.Aside from the obvious behavioral consequences of addiction, the negative effects on a person’s health are potentially devastating.

Drug addiction has strong effects on the family too.The addict pushes them away from their parents, brothers and sisters. This can prove to be very difficult for the family as it is a source of support for anybody. In many cases, the addict is forced out of his home for treatement or due to the danger that they can pose.

The economy and society is also badly affected by drug addiction. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reported that some $67 billion per year is the impact that drug addiction has on this country.

There are many remedies to cure this addiction.Among them the most popular is incarceration.According to Wikipedia, incarceration is the detention of a person in jail, typically as a punishment for a crime.Incarceration serves four essential purposes with regard to criminals:

1. To punish criminals for committing crimes.
2. To isolate criminals to prevent them from committing more crimes.
3. To deter others from committing crimes.
4. To rehabilitate criminals.

However, this particular method has received much flak.According to some psychologists and therapists, when in prison, the likelihood of a person nursing a desire to do drugs is higher.”Drug addiction is not a crime,it is only a sickness of the mind”,they propagate. In this regard,it is essential to treat the victims and not punish them.In addition, incarceration costs 10 times more than treatement and some governments cannot afford it.

A better alternative is rehabilitation and treatement. The sickness must be cured. This can only happen when the addict is helped to get rid of the drug content in their body.A number of successful rehabilitaion centres have successfully brought about a change in many addicts. They use a variety of biological, physical and psychological methods to get their job done.Contrary to popular belief, many addicts have returned to normalcy after stints at rehabilitation centres.

Drug addiction can be a serious problem which can be rooted out if we exercise a little more caution and act responsible and help the government in busting drug-trafficking rackets.Besides,we must ensure that our family members ,especially the youngsters move around with the right people and do not indulge in any kind of drug abuse.

Taking the Internet’s omnipresence into consideration,it is essential that we also teach our children to use this wonderful device.Albeit the utility of the Internet,it is also the most over exploited medium, which makes it unsafe for use by children, who are very tender and sensitive.A child’s reception is much stronger than that of an adult’s and they are incapable of distinguishing between the right and the wrong stimuli, which can lead to disastrous consequences. Thus, we must be very cautious while exposing our children to stuff on the net.

What needs to be told to them is the vast network that the Internet has created around the world.Thousands of new sites are born everyday which contains vast amount of information. On the contrary, there are also websites which can be of harm to your child, from which they are to be protected.

A large number of encyclopedias have online versions, which consists of interesting facts. Some websites also provide tutorials in math, grammar and other subjects with much fun.The Internet is also chockablock with games and other activities which aid in enhancing your child’s intelligence. These must be introduced to them.At the same time, you must also ensure that your child does not become addicted to them.

In order to overcome these problems,it is important for the parents to explain both the pros and cons of overusing the Internet,to their child. They must closely monitor their child’s usage of the net and must also keep a tab on the timings. They must allow their child to use the net for not more than an hour everyday, unless it is being used for homework or projects. This supervision must also not be too close, lest the child becomes rebellious or is curious to surf beyond what they can .Teach your child some safety precautions like not interacting with strangers or giving away personal details.

The Internet has created with the aim of making the world one large place and offering first-hand information and insight into various themes from all over the world. It has grown so much more and has become a commercial hub today. But it still continues to be the most helpful instrument to have been known to mankind.

We depend on many forces in our daily lives. We keep our house clean with a vacuume cleaner, our dishes sparkle because of theTips for Conserving Electricity dishwasher, our clothes smell heavenly, courtesy, the washing machine,we are entertained by the television, live without darkness with the lamp or light and all these in turn function perfectly through electricity.

Electricity or electric energy has become indispensable in our lives. We would be handicapped without it.The whole world is served through it.Imagining life without it is next to impossible.Yet, this is a stark reality in many parts of the world to this day. Many small villages in the countries of  Asia and Africa are still waiting for the light of a lamp and the sound of an electric motor.

So far electricity has been produced with non-renewable sources of energy which has been depleting at an alarming rate.As the world’s population increases,so do the demand for the electricity and the indirect demand for fossil fuels. There is an urgent need to look at alternative sources for the generation of electricity. While the research for these non-conventional sources is on,the need of the hour is to conserve electricity and prevent wastage.

We could begin by doing everything in our capacity to cut down our consumption of electricity. Here are a few tips which could help.Quite astonishingly there can be a considerable amount of reduction in your power bill.

1. To begin with the small items, lights can add a lot to your bill when kept switched on all the time.So make sure you turn them off when you don’t need them.
2. Try to soak in the natural air and turn off those AC’s.
3. Monitor your usage of the washing machine and driers.Washing machines guzzle down electricity.
4. Only run the dishwasher when it is fully loaded;adjust the water level on the washing machine for smaller loads and clean out the lint filter in your drier before every load.
5. Set your thermostat at a reasonable temperature .Set it as high or as low as you need to be comfortable, but don’t heat or cool excessively.
6. Unplug any chargers that aren’t in use because they still use electricity even when they ‘re not actively charging something.
7. Hang clothes on a clothesline instead of using a drier to conserve electricity .
8. Use your appliances efficiently to conserve electricity.Refrain from opening your oven unnecessarily because it has to work harder and use more energy to heat back up.

In addition you could install solar panels on your terrace to absorb the sunlight and generate solar power. Many responsible citizens have also started organizing energy conservation drives in their neighbourhoods and are doing their bit in bringing about a small difference. It is only through the people that such drives can be successful. We must care for our planet and for the future generations and ensure that they lead a wholesome life too.

Balancing between the Motherhood and CareerIt is every woman’s dream to marry and have a beautiful family. She aspires to be a good mother to her children and give them all the happiness in the world and spend time with them.

However, lately there has been a surge in the number of women working and pursuing a serious career. They don’t have time for anything else but their work. Their lives center around their workplace and everything else becomes secondary. Though, women are largely known to be good multi-taskers, they’re unable to.

In such a scenario, how can a woman be a good mother to her children? An increasing percentage of women rely on nannies, governesses and creches to take care of their children. But nothing or nobody can be substitute for a mother. Often, children in such cases, feel neglected and ignored. This affects their esteem and confidence. As a result, they become defensive and aggressive.

Today, a number of husbands are taking the initiative and supporting their busy wives. They don’t mind staying at home and spending time with their children. But there are still a lot of men, who believe the wife must watch over the kids.

A few tips to maintain the right balance between your job and your family

  • Time management is the key. It is very important to maintain a schedule and work according to it.
  • Don’t bring much of your office work home. It can be a spoiler.
  • When at home, spend as much time talking to your children and helping them out with their school work.
  • Make sure the children are engaged in some activity but at the same time also are not hard-pressed for time.
  • Play a lot of games with your family, both indoor and outdoor.
  • You could sometimes take them to your workplace. Some offices do have a separate cabin for children of working women and they can spend time with other children.
  • Hire a maid to do the household chores. This will give you more time with the kids.

In addition, take your children out. Socialize, meet your friends and relatives frequently and keep your children around people often.

More women these days are okay with taking time off work for a few months and taking care of their children. Once the child has settled into the groove, they gradually resume their work. This shift, though a risky one, is now being widely accepted.

by- Jessica VerderameBiscuits and Gravy

As a lifelong New Yorker, I never tried biscuits and gravy until I met my Kentucky-native boyfriend. But once he introduced them to me and taught me how to make the southern delicacy, I was hooked and have been making it ever since. There is nothing healthy about this delicious southern dish, but maybe that’s why it’s so good.

It’s perfect for hangovers, when all you want is something fattening and comforting, and you can make it as simple or complicated as you wish. For example, I used a mix to make the biscuits, but I made my own breakfast sausage. If I’m super lazy, I’ll use premade biscuit dough and premade breakfast sausage. I’m not much of a baker, so I usually use canned biscuit dough or a powdered mix, though I imagine making the biscuits from scratch would make this recipe even better.

Got left over biscuits from this recipe? Add sugar to some strawberries and let them macerate—they will break down and make a syrup; warm and butter the biscuits, and spoon the mixture over the top.

Biscuits and Gracy –

1 recipe for biscuits, homemade or from a mix

1 lb ground pork

1 tsp fresh sage, chopped

1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped

1 tsp fennel seeds

¼ cup maple syrup

Salt and pepper

¼ cup flour

1 ½ cups milk

1. Combine the pork, sage, thyme, fennel, maple syrup, salt and pepper in a bowl and mix with hands until just combined.

2. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, add pork mixture, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and meat starts getting slightly caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.

3. Remove sausage mixture with a slotted spoon to a plate lined with paper towels. If necessary, add more oil to the pan. Add ¼ cup of flour and cook for about 5 minutes. Add milk to a pan and whisk well to make the gravy smooth. Let thicken for about 2 minutes, adding more milk if needed. Add sausage back into the pan and cook for about a minute more.

4. To serve, spoon gravy over warm biscuits.
